4th December 2008:Biomass Boiler Site Visit (a joint event with the Scotland New Generation Group and Business Environment Partnership)

Macphie of Glenbervie,Stonehaven is the UK's leading food ingredients manufacturer. They recently became the first manufacturer to produce food ingredients using green energy created from locally-sourced wood chips. Construction of an on-site, multi-million pound 1.2MW biomass boiler has been completed, which is the first of its kind in Scotland. Annually the boiler will use 5,000 tonnes of wood chips to generate up to 1,950kg of steam per hour, which will be fed directly into their UHT factory to produce a range of sauces, fruit coulis, desserts, dairy cream alternatives and glazes. This will reduce CO2 emissions by 2,100 tonnes annually.

The site visit focused on biomass and considered how to assess the potential for renewable energy on your own site.
