Keenan Recycling Ltd. has operated an open windrow composting facility primarily treating local authority green and wood wastes and producing compost to the PAS100 product standard for a number of years.

With support from the Waste and Resource Action Programme (WRAP), in November 2008, Keenan's commenced operation of the largest Vertical Composting Unit (VCU) in Europe which has allowed the expansion of their operation to deal with kitchen waste and commercial food wastes in line with the Animal By Products Regulations as well as garden waste. The VCU is producing an excellent product that is rich in NPK nutrients.

Delegates on this visit were given the opportunity to see and hear about the Vertical Composting Unit chambers, computerised monitoring system, maturation building and the final compost product.
