How to apply for Full Membership
The Process

You may now be eligible for Full membership (MCIWM Chartered Waste Manager). To check whether you are eligible please see the criteria below. 

As a Full member, in addition to your current benefits you will also receive the following:
 
•         Enhanced Professional Status.
•         The use of the designatory letters MCIWM and the title ‘Chartered Waste Manager’.
•         Full voting rights for elections to Centre and General Councils and the opportunity to sit on CIWM committees, therefore offering you a chance to play a more active role in the work of the Institution.
•         Full Membership of the Institution makes a statement about your professional capabilities and commitment to the industry.
 
To become a MCIWM (Chartered Waste Manager), all candidates have to attend a professional interview.    We hope that setting a specific date for interviews will help candidates plan and prepare effectively for their interview. The thought of a professional interview may seem daunting but don’t let it put you off applying. 

 
As part of the application process, references are required.  We will write to your references after submission of your application. Referees must already be a full member of CIWM or another chartered institution.

CRITERIA
Simplified Application

MEMBER (MCIWM) (Chartered Waste Manager)
Minimum age of 25
Has a relevant degree or post-graduate qualification and has a minimum of four years relevant
continuous experience in wastes management including structured training.
OR
Is a Corporate Member of a relevant Chartered Institution and has a minimum of two years
relevant continuous experience in wastes management.
OR


The Experienced Practitioner Route (EPR)
This route into Membership is designed for those who have considerable experience within the waste industry but have few or no formal qualifications.
 
Entry Requirements
 
•       Minimum of Five Years Experience in the Waste Industry
 
•       Minimum Age 35
 
•       Application to include an expanded supporting statement as specified below
 
Applicants should complete an application form. The application should include:-
 
•       Copies of any education or training certificates
•       A Full CV highlighting Waste Management Experience
•       Expanded supporting statement
 
Requirements for Expanded Supporting Statement
 
This statement should be of approx 4,000 words in length and candidates should demonstrate how they meet the following key competencies:-
 
•       Knowledge and understanding of the wastes management Industry. To include:-
 
-      Current And Impending Legislation
-      Waste Strategy
-      Hot Topics and Current Affairs
-      Compostion of the Industry and who does what
 
•       Ability to analyse and evaluate problems and develop practical solutions
 
-      Give examples within own work of how these competencies are met
-      Demonstrate creativity, innovation and Imagination
 
•       Leadership in the management of waste giving examples of:-
 
-      Team management
-      Project Management
-      Motivation
-      Mentoring and support
-      Promotion of sustainable waste management
 
•       Effective Interpersonal Skills giving examples of:-
 
-      Written Communication
-      Presentations
-      Engaging information and giving advice
-      Chairing meetings and committee representation
-      Technical publications and reports written
 
•       A personal commitment to professional standards recognising obligations to society, the profession and the environment. Give examples of:-
 
-      Promotion of sustainable waste management
-      Engagement with key stakeholders
-      Working within legislative and regulatory frameworks
-      Personal development and training
 
In order to illustrate how these competencies are met candidates should use examples of projects they have worked on.  These competencies will be explored further at the professional interview.
